What's your latest?
This post is for Jo. We love you Jo. Hopefully this post will get you out of purgatory and "no woman's land"!!! :-) So here's a neutral post question...
What was the last book that you read/are reading? Is it good? What's it about? Whether it's Dr. Seuss or Wesley's Works Vol. I-XIII, I'm interested to know what you guys are reading!
While in school, it's hard to read other books besides textbooks and the Bible, but But other than A Child is Born and MY Pregnancy Week by Week, I've recently picked up Max Lucado's It's Not About Me off my bookshelf, which I had not read yet for some reason. I'm really enjoying it. It's giving me a new perspective on God's perspective of humanity and how we were created to glorify Him. Sometimes it is easy to focus our relationship with God on our salvation, but even our salvation is something God has created to glorify Himself. We were born to glorify Him- through everything. I'd recommend it; it's an easy, but yummy read.

1. "Embracing Brokenness; How God Refines Us Through Life's Disappointments" by Alan E Nelson
2. "Captivating" by John & Staci Eldridge
3. "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" by Marc Weissbluth, M.D.
Can you expound upon "Captivating", Kayla? It sounds captivating! :-)
Oh...yes, Captivating is amazing!! Angela, you MUST read it!! It is all about receiving the lavish love that the Lord has for you as a woman. Go get it!!
I am reading a FABULOUS book by an up-and-coming bestselling author....Laura Mitchell!! It's almost ready for the publisher, and is IN-credible!! (Can't tell you the title yet though.)
Another great book is "Forever Ruined for the Ordinary" by Joy Dawson...but it's hard to get because it's out of print. It's all about the adventure of learning to hear God's voice, and learning to seek Him until you find Him in all situations.
Captivating..."Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman's Soul"...as described in the title...
It's similar to Wild at Heart (written for men) but this one is for women, and, in my opinion, I feel that this book was much more impacting on the women who have read it (this is my second time reading it) than Wild at Heart was on the men...but, again, that's just my opinion. There is a workbook out now for Captivating, as well.
The back of the book sums it up best by saying, "The message of 'Captivating' is this: Your heart matters more than anything else in all creation. The desires you had as a little girl and the longings you feel as a woman--they are telling you of the life God created you to live. He offers to come now s the Hero of your story, to rescue your heart and release you to live as a fully alive and feminine woman. A woman who is truly captivating."
Elizabeth, are you speaking if THE Laura Mitchell that I attended BBC with, worked on a physchology paper with, and whose bras and underwear I put in the freezer and froze????
It's now on my list to read!!!
I can't WAIT for Laura's book and the great unveiling!!!
Oh I am SO feeling the extra-inclusive love Ang.
Hmmm.
I just finished "Wounds that Heal" by Stephen Seamands. It's good because it goes through all the major types of pain a person can go through, and then shows how Jesus experienced it too, and that is the reason that the Cross is not only a place of redemption, but of healing. It's kind of devotional. I think most of you ladies would enjoy it a lot.
Also, I'm reading "Elmer Gantry" by nobel-prize winning Sinclair Lewis. It is a book about a man who goes into ministry for power-hungry ego-boosting reasons, and what that looks like. Very witty and sarcastic. It really shook the nation back when it was first published. :)
To balance that, I also just finished a book called "Gilead" by Marilynne Robinson (who has one several literary awards). It is about an older rural pastor-father who is dying and is writing memoirs, lessons, expressed love, and reflections to his seven year old son. It made me cry and was beautiful, bold, tender, and thoughtful. There was a lot of philosophy worked in there too. Definately not for wussys!
And lastly, I'm reading Jurgen Moltmann's "The Way of Jesus" slowly and surely, because it is so heavy and I want to understand what he is saying completely.
:) Yay for neutral posts!
I also just finished "Captiviating." Bawled my way through a few of the chapters and could hardly see to read the words!! I highly recommend it! I thought I was the only female, Christian left who hadn't read it! lol Glad to know I'm not THAT behind. :) I also just finished "For Women Only: What you need to know about the inner lives of men" by Shaunti Feldhahn. It was also an eye-opening read, hopefully someday I'll be able to take what I've learned and put it to good use. Tonight I'm about to begin "Abba's Child" by Brennan Manning I've heard amazing things about it and I'm really looking forward to reading it.
p.s. i appreciate (and honestly enjoy) all the recent posts related to pregnancy, etc., but like jo, i am thankful for something neutral i can actually respond to on an "amy level"....if you know what i mean! haha :)
Well, for anyone interested in further "neutral" posts, I posted a "neutral" question on my site that I could use some input on.
Brennan Manning books are great....Abba's Child, that Amy mentioned, is fantastic!
So seriously, I just read "Cat in the Hat" the other day to add to our book worm in class. Basically I have been reading Dr. Seuss, David Crowder's Praise Habit, Love & Respect by Dr. Eggerich and Drawing Near by John Bevere. They have all been great however "The Cat in the Hat" was not as good as I remembered it being. I much perfer "The Sneetches" or some of his other writings.
