The Sabbath
For the past 8 months or so, I have been the pianist at a local 7th Day Adventist Church here in town. At times, it has been interesting, but the biggest thing is that it has challenged me to return to the Word to study the principle and commandment of the Sabbath. Judy Mann Deroche posted a good starter on her blog http://mrsroach.blogspot.com/, which got me thinking...I'd really like to hear where the Lord has taken your heart in this direction? Or maybe it's something you need to be reminded of? "All Scripture is God breathed and is profitable for teaching, correction, and rebuke." The sabbath is a Scriptural principle. Do we abuse the freedom we have in Christ too often by not taking this seriously? I believe that we have reacted in such a way to our ancestors who were very legalistic (at least in my case) about keeping the sabbath, that now maybe we've gone to an extreme of abusing this principle that God has in place for our own protection. What do you think? Go to Judy's site, or comment here. I want to hear you.
Thanks.

Hi, Ang. Let's play the piano some time. Okay, on to the Sabbath. We have discussed this a lot in our home, and I just can't escape the idea that we're making the Sabbath all about us. Every discussion I've heard on the topic asks whether or not we can do it. Then those who say we don't need to point to Christian freedom and the like. Like it or not, Christians, Christian freedom reflects why He came. He did NOT come to abolish the Law and the Prophets (the NT way of saying "Old Testament"). He came to FULFILL it. In other words, our sins are atoned for. We still have to follow God's plan, though, including the COMMAND to rest. Do I have a perfect answer for what that looks like? No. I do, however, believe we need to rest and that to the glory of God. Enough of, "Well, that was then, this is now." All that really means is, "I want it my way."
I agree with you Lynn & Angela.
**please read everything I say following with the plural "you"***
Selfishness has permeated everything. The hard part about it is that we're all selfish! If you're truly honest with yourself, you have more selfish thoughts and do more selfish things than you might ever care to admit or acknowledge. However, as we learn to love God more by understanding and accepting how much He loves us, it will become a natural desire to want to honor God. What I mean is that as you grow in relationship with God, taking each step on the journey with purpose, you will realize that honoring the Law and the Prophets (who really just reiterated the law to the stubborn, selfish children of Israel) honors God!
Until you are at a point in your relationship with God that you see this, it will never make sense...and will seem very legalistic. As you learn to value God, His word will also become more valuable....duh, I know.
And, it should be the desire of those who are farther along in their journey of relationship with God to help those just starting, or struggling along, to learn the value of God's Word. I believe this will also be a natural desire with each step in your journey of relationship with God.
Also, when we are rested, honoring the Sabbath...keeping it holy, we are in turn a blessing to all the people we are in relationshp with. I see that in my own life!! When I value God over myself, I am a very different person. (I'm sure most people who know me can vouch for that)
I think we need a day each week to be set apart specifically to worship and rest (not that we don't worship and rest the other 6 days). Without such a day, we aren't as effective as stewards.
But it doesn't really matter which day of the week it is. It was Saturday in the OT b/c that's when God 'rested' from His creative work. It was Sunday for the early church b/c that's when God rose from the dead. Those days probably make the best symbolic sense.
All the what can/can't you do on the Sabbath debate seems kinda silly to me. For some people mowing a lawn is relaxing. For others it's a chore. To each his own in good conscience.
